i wake up and i cannot see. i remember reading in the book tangerine by edward bloor that they pinned down his younger brother and spray painted his eyes white, and everyone told him that he had to wear the thick glasses because he looked at a solar eclipse without sunglasses on when he was younger- he believed them. i walk into the bathroom and i open the cabinet. i take out the tube of toothpaste and i unscrew the lid, but when i squeeze it there are these tiny hairy legs coming out and they're wiggling around. and i realize that it's a caterpillar. it's getting longer and longer. and now i'm squeezing it like soft serve ice cream into the sink. i pick him up and he's spilling over the edges of my fingers. i realize that he's too long to be a normal caterpillar anymore, but I tell him that i accept him and that he's going to be okay. you're going to be okay. and he tells me to sing
